Wallathon 2018

The Dry Stone Walling Association is 50 years old. The Dorset Branch is 10 years old.

We are planning a Wallathon to celebrate these milestones. This is an attempt to re-build a stretch of 100 metres of wall in a weekend over the first May bank holiday.   Fri 4th May – Mon. 7th May 2018

We are being sponsored by the AONB South Dorset Ridgeway project which is coming to an end this year.

We are inviting anyone who has walled with the Dorset branch over the last 3 years, either as members or on a course, Eucan conservation group members and members of DSWA from all over the country.

We will be walling on the Ridgeway along the route of the SW Coast Path (inland route).

The idea is to split participants into teams of about 6 with an experienced waller in charge of each team, a couple of proficient but perhaps not quite so experienced and 2 or 3 less able builders in each team. We hope that people will join us for all 3 days but if they can only spare 1 or 2 we’ll still be pleased to see them.

We are also hoping to build in a carved stone to mark the event.

The village hall at Portesham is booked to enable people coming from away can stay, bringing their own camp beds/mats/sleeping bags (based on a first come first served basis) and we will be providing supper on Fri and Sat nights, breakfast Sat, Sun and Mon together with the ingredients for lunch. This will all be free. There is planned to be a meal at the pub on Sun night which will need to be paid for. We will send out menu options and details of that nearer the time.

Local participants may be able to join in the evening meals depending on the numbers – we will let you know.

We have a volunteer to organise the catering but any extra help would be very welcome, and of course, we want lots of people out on the wall.
