Funding and Grants

Funding to repair or rebuild dry stone walls is available for walls on an agricultural holding that is registered under an agricultural-conservation scheme such as the Countryside Stewardship Scheme.

At the time of writing (August 2024), the following schemes are available:

BN12: Stone wall restoration £31.91 per metre (m) for restoration
Available for walls where at least one-third of the original height has to be dismantled and rebuilt in order to complete the restoration as part of Countryside Stewardship.

BN14: Stone wall supplement – stone from quarry £164.50 per metre (m)
Available for walls being rebuilt using BN12 unser Countryside Stewardship.

BN13: Top wiring – stone wall £5.54 per metre (m)
To help control livestock and conserve traditional landscapes for walls being rebuilt using BN12 under Countryside Stewardship.

BND1: Maintain dry stone walls £27 per 100 metres (m) for both sides
Separate funding available for the maintenance of dry stone walls in good condition under the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) scheme.

Walls within designated areas such as National Parks, National Landscapes (formerly Areas of Outstanding National Beauty AONBs) or Conservation Areas, may also be eligible for funding through local grants.
