DESCRIPTION:Dorset DSWA members may be interested in helping the DIGS group geoconservation workparty at Crack Lane Quarry\, Langton Matravers. Note that this session has been rescheduled from November 12.   \nThe disused quarry at Crack Lane exposes the Broken Shell Limestone Bed\, or Burr\, used as ashlar and rubble-stone in many medieval buildings and walls\, including Corfe Castle.  \nThe quarry was also the source of Purbeck Marble which has been widely used for interior decorative features. However\, Purbeck Marble is not very resilient to exterior use. Its constituent iron minerals\, responsible for its colour\, tend to oxidise when exposed. Still\, rust-coloured lumps of weathered Purbeck Marble can be found in some local buildings and walls. \nThe Dorset’s Important Geological Sites (DIGS) Group conserves the County’s Local Geological Sites (LGS)\, also known as Regionally Important Geological Sites (RIGS).
